Lining up for food isn’t something we expect from a rice shop. But that is how things are at Nasi Kukus Ilham as they are known for their specially made to order nasi kukus (rice with freshly fried chicken, special sauce, anchovies, and acar). As it is a self-service shop, you would have to line up, pay and only then eat the nasi kukus.
Although the shops have minimal decorations and basic furnishings, all 3 stores are still packed with people during lunch and dinner. If you are late to order during these times, you might find yourself standing in a long queue with no seats available. Every day is a busy day for this folks.
What makes them so special?
Their signature fried chicken is the major key to their success since 3 years back. Nasi Kukus Ilham only served the best of best chicken for their customers. The chickens are all freshly fried. Their 3 special curries which are gulai ikan, gulai darat, and kuah kerutup daging blends well with one another and it really tastes good when eaten with steamed rice. Opt for extra sambal belacan or none at all, depending on your mood and taste but let us warn you first that the sambal is a fiery one!
The overall experience of eating Nasi Kukus Ilham is alright, nothing extraordinary. True, they pulled a mean curry and sambal but the rice is not as fluffy as we expect it to be. It is worth its price and we hoped they could improve the texture of the rice in the near future.
