Laksa Johor

A Southern Dish with a Western Twist

Since Malaysia Day is just around the corner, we thought it might be fun to look at the signature dishes in different states across Malaysia. For our first peak, we are bringing you all the way to the most southern state in the Peninsula.

Johor – Home of the Southern Tigers. It is where the city of food, Muar, is located. Why do we call it the city of food? Well, they have satay and lontong available for breakfast. Enough said. Now, we are going to look at one of the best dishes Johor has to offer; the Laksa Johor.

Laksa Johor brings a certain unique twist with it. It is served with spaghetti instead of the traditional rice noodles. The history goes where Sultan Abu Bakar, the Founder of Modern Johor, fell in love with spaghetti during his time in Italy. After coming back from the European country, he commissioned the royal chefs to replace traditional rice noodle with spaghetti in his laksa Johor and it remained that way ever since.

What makes this laksa so special is not just the spaghetti, but the broth itself. It consists of ingredients such as ikan parang (wolf herring), prawns and dried prawns, kerisik and many more that gives Laksa Johor its unique taste!
