RECIPE: Simple Roti Jala

Everyone knows how to enjoy Roti Jala. The forgotten cousin of the Roti Canai only appears during rare occasions, like feasts or Aidilfitri open houses. Roti Jala is hard to hate, especially when the deciding factor on the quality of the meal is the curry. Some people even enjoy it with Durian gravy. So it is what it is, a kind of Roti to help you enjoy your favourite gravy.

But do you know how to make them? We all know the reason why these babies only pop up during the festive season: it’s because tak ramai yang tahu how to cook it. True?

So here’s what you need:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (150g)
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • ¾ cup coconut milk mixed with ¾ cup (180ml) water
  • Vegetable oil to grease pan
  • Roti Jala cup
  1. Put the cup of all-purpose flour and ground turmeric together into a large bowl. Add the salt then stir in the egg and the santan until it becomes a slightly thicker batter.

  3. Once you’re done, fold in both sides of the Roti Jala and roll.
  4. Enjoy your Roti Jala with curry or Durian Gravy!
